If your one of our regular customers, you probably have noticed the face-lifts taking place at our Baton Rouge and Denham Spring Stores. While it’s been a bit of a mess we’re almost finished! The Denham Springs Store gets a new Home Decor’ Center. This new addition completes the home building experience with a great line of cabinets, hardware, flooring (carpet, laminate, wood and ceramic), appliances and an expanded paint department. We now carry Devoe, Pratt & Lambert and Ralph Lauren Paint!
Our Baton Rouge Store gets a new look too! We are nearly finished with our remodeling and will have an expanded hardware department offering many more items than ever before. We also have dedicated an area of our store to contractor sales to better serve our local builders.
Stop by either location, grab a cup of coffee and browse our new departments. We appreciate your patience during our face-lift!

Thoughts from the Holmes Building Materials Employee Newsletter. We have a wonderful group of employees who we call family. So from our family to yours…
Have a Happy Thanksgiving!

Today is Veterans Day and instead of a How To, I thought we could just take a little time to thank all the Veterans who have proudly served in our military. Everyone has a family member or a friend who selflessly made the decision to serve and protect our freedom. The world is full of turmoil, but in America we still have the freedom that our forefathers promised. A special salute goes out to all Veterans!
OSHA Regulations are tough! We all get hounded by OSHA and it’s important to feel like you have all your bases covered. Holmes Building Materials and Pelican State Supply make it easy. We have Personal Safety Kits, Body Harnesses in a handy carry bucket and OSHA Approved Scaffolding. Just send your crew members by one of our convenient locations. We’ll fix them up and you won’t have any of the headaches.
Call: (225) 926-2031, (225) 664-4126 or (225) 354-7916!

Brushes are the oldest and most versatile applicator. It’s almost impossible to complete a paint project without one. There are basically two types of bristles…natural and synthetic.
Natural bristle brushes can be used with oil based paints and varnishes. But, since natural brushes absorb water, they’re not a good choice for use with latex paints. Natural bristles absorb water in latex paints, eventually making the brush soft, floppy and unmanageable.
Synthetic bristle brushes on the other hand, can be used with any type of paint. However, you should be aware that some synthetic brushes have smooth, glass-like bristles that don’t hold or spread paint very well. But not Do-it-Best synthetic bristle brushes. They are patented bristles called BRISTLEON, which are not affected by moisture and have a rough surface that holds and spreads any paint effectively.

Follow these steps and you’ll have a new lighting fixture up in no time:
Shut off the power to the circuit that controls this fixture. If you are unsure you have turned off the correct circuit, try the light switch to make sure the power is off.
Remove the old globe from the ceiling fixture. Some globes have decorative knobs, so unscrew each of these knobs while holding the globe up with one hand.
Once the globe has been removed, remove all light bulbs and unscrew the mounting bracket that is attached to the housing box. Find the wire groupings connected by wire nuts in the housing box. Unscrew each of the wire nuts and untangle any wires so that each wire is separate and exposed.
Refer to the instructions that came with the new lighting fixture. You will be matching up each wire by color from the wires in the housing box and the wires in the new ceiling fixture. If the new fixture comes with a grouping plate, be sure to attach to the housing box with the mounting screws provided.
The grounding plate has a green grounding terminal on it. Wrap the grounding wire (it will be green or copper) coming out of the housing box around the terminal and tighten with a screw driver.
Twist the black wire in the housing box to the black wire on the new ceiling fixture. Now screw a wire nut to these wires making sure to protect all exposed wires. Cover any exposed wiring with electrical tape if needed.
Twist the white wire in the housing box to the white wire on the new ceiling fixture. Again, screw a wire nut to these wires making sure that all exposed wires are completely covered. Add electrical tape over the wire nut if any exposed wires are showing.
After all wires are carefully connected to the housing box, secure the canopy (the base of the fixture) to the housing box. Assemble the fixture according to instructions that came with it. Put in new light bulbs that are the wattage indicated on the new fixture.
Attach the globe to the canopy, which is usually done by tightening a decorative screw at its base. Restore power to the circuit and turn on the light. Hopefully your light is on and you have a beautiful new lighting fixture. Give yourself a pat on the back!
Please contact a electrician for trouble shooting.
